About Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello and The Imposters – Steve Nieve (keyboards), Davey Faragher (bass), Pete Thomas (drums) – have made a sensational new album that ranks alongside the best work this singularly great artist has ever produced. Recorded in Hollywood, New York City and Vancouver, British Columbia, ‘Look Now’ is beautiful in its simplicity, reflective in its lyrical vision, surrounded by melodies and orchestrations that are nothing short of heavenly. It’s the first album Costello has made with The Imposters since the 2008 release of ‘Momofuku’ and his first new album since the acclaimed 2013 Roots collaboration, ‘Wise Up Ghost’. Anyone anywhere in the world who has seen Elvis Costello and The Imposters live can testify to their unmitigated swagger. Costello’s suspicion that it was time to return to the studio was confirmed while on the ‘Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers’ tour of the USA, last summer and he realized the power and sheer musicality of The Imposters had never really been fully captured on one record. “I knew if we could make an album with the scope of ‘Imperial Bedroom’ and some of the beauty and emotion of ‘Painted From Memory’, we would really have something”, said Costello. ‘Look Now’ is an outstanding 12-strong addition to his song catalogue. Most of the titles were written solely by Elvis Costello although, ‘Don’t Look Now’ and ‘Photographs Can Lie’ were co-written with Burt Bacharach, who makes a guest appearance, leading The Imposters from the piano for those two ballads. Another song to which Bacharach contributed, ‘He’s Given Me Things’ features some of the best singing Elvis has ever recorded, while ‘Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter’ was written with Carole King and closes with a serpentine horn line winding around Steve Nieve’s atmospheric keyboard parts. The album was co-produced by Elvis and Sebastian Krys - the Latin Grammy Producer of the Year for 2007 and 2015, whose love and understanding of music spans both hemispheres. Sebastian had worked extensively with Pete and Davey in the Los Angeles studios, so it’s no surprise that this dynamic rhythm section was incredibly well-prepared for the recording sessions. “When Pete and Davey are in this kind of rare form, it’s wise to get on the back-beat with your Telecaster and stay out of their way”, said Costello. Speaking of his own role as co-producer, Costello said, “I had all of the orchestrations and vocal parts in my head or on the page before we played a note, so it was essential that I worked closely with Steve Nieve to maintain the light and space in the arrangements and allow him to shine.” Costello completed the picture by adding both guitar and his own vibraphone or celesta parts to his orchestrations but remarked, “Sebastian was there to make sure only the essential notes got onto the record, whether it was a fuzz-tone guitar or jazz bassoon.” “In the final mixing, Sebastian did a beautiful job of keeping everything present but always lead by emotion or narrative, although when balancing the band, my voice and the quartet of woodwinds and horns that I’d written for ‘Stripping Paper’, I told him to “Just trust the blur.”

He jammed as much as he could into this show!! It was fantastic. I really wanted to head Veronica but, I have yet to see him sing it live. I worry that he is putting too much into it. Lol, his health must come first. Seriously, one of THE BEST SHOWS. Blondie was fantastic too. (Rapture was a little rough but she can still do the rap!l)

Great venue. Sound for Elvis was awful (opening act sounded great). As for the performance, Elvis seems to have lost the ability to sing on key in the middle of his range, and the middle of the set was packed with indulgent, non-musical, poorly performed filler. I have seen him before, at this venue. This was not a good show.

The set was great though I was disappointed with the Mahaffey acoustics. I LOVED everything that was going on in the show, so much to look at! The last time I saw him perform live he was at The Palladium, NYC in nineteen seventy nine. So glad he beat the Big C and continues to share his time and talent with us.

Excellent show with finale of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" with songwriter Nick Lowe. Surprised Elvis didn’t mention that the original video for that song was filmed in Vancouver back in the ‘70s! Check out the video on YouTube with unmistakable scenes of the Attractions in Stanley Park with the totem poles and north shore mountains in background!

EC was great, but the venue was lacking with narrow seats and felt more like a conference room. Also, first two songs his guitar and monitor were not working. The show was much shorter than other shows just before. The performances were great after everything kicked in. Would rather see him in a more suitable concert hall.

Good show. Elvis' voice isn't quite as strong as it once was (no surprise) but strong band and backing vocals more than made up for that. First time at that venue and the 'all on one level' seating was a little challenging for us not-so-tall folks. Good video screens on both sides of the stage helped.

I've always loved Elvis Costello, and have seen him in the past, when he does all his main music. This was a very different show, as he was working with a bunch of special guests, which made the set-list more eclectic. The music was amazing, and he, as always, was a great story teller.

The show was fantastic -- best live performance we've seen here in years. I'd never been to this particular venue before. It's wonderful. Great sight lines, a rather intimate setting, really good sound. It's a gem in Indiana. It was a genuine thrill to see both Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe. Absolutely loved it!

Decent show, but far from the best I’ve seen from EC and ___ . Can’t quite explain what was missing, but didn’t engage me so deeply. My second floor balcony seats were fourth or fifth row - but under an overhang and that might have muddled the sound quality- maybe a contributing factor.

A truly fantastic performance from Elvis. The master of reworking favourite songs. The Brodsky Quartet magnificently supporting Elvis in giving new interpretations of these great songs. And that Steve Nieve was pretty good too ! Mr Nieve a true master of the keyboards. And Elvis wondering through the theatre singing to us personally a star touch.
