About Sturgill Simpson
Respected, beloved and fiercely independent, Sturgill Simpson is set to make his highly anticipated return to music this year with the release of the forthcoming full-length album, Passage Du Desir, under a new name, Johnny Blue Skies. The eight-song album was produced by Johnny Blue Skies and David Ferguson and recorded at Clement House Recording Studio in Nashville, TN and Abbey Road Studios in London, England. Simpson and his band—Kevin Black (bass), Robbie Crowell (keys), Laur Joamets (guitar) and Miles Miller (drums)—will also make their long-awaited return to the road this fall with the "Why Not? Tour." Simpson’s first full tour in over four years, the extensive headline run includes stops at L.A.’s The Greek Theatre, Washington State’s The Gorge Amphitheatre, Lexington’s Rupp Arena, Chicago’s Salt Shed (two nights), Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium and Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena among many more. Simpson will also headline Outside Lands and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Since his debut, Simpson has released five full-length studio albums—2013’s High Top Mountain, 2014’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, 2016’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, 2019’s Sound & Fury and 2021’s The Ballad of Dood and Juanita—along with the 2020 projects, Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Throughout his singular career, Simpson has relentlessly pushed against expectations, earning widespread acclaim and countless accolades including a Grammy Award in 2017 for Best Country Album and six Grammy nominations across four genres: country, rock, bluegrass and americana

I don't like the Maverick Center as a music venue, but this was one of the best shows I've seen this year. They started right at show time, 8pm, and played 160 minutes of hits with jam sessions and his best form of the band ever. Everybody was on point. Their engineer should kick up the bass / subwoofer a bit more, though. But wow. And a Roy Orbison cover? Bravo.

Amazing show, great venue. Wished that Durand Jones had a longer set but for Sturgill/Johnny Blue Skies to play three hard hours was amazing. Lol oy negative was the frat boy douche bag group that was talking and drunk and being obnoxious but that’s not on anyone other than those drunk idiots. Cannot wait to see him again in Boston next month!

Man if you ever get the chance to see Sturgil, please do it. You will forever regret it if you don’t. Even with a chest cold and the altitude he still killed it. His vocals are just plain out amazing! I am so glad knocked this one off my bucket list. Do yourself a favor and go see him.

Great show with all the songs we wanted to hear. There were a few times I thought the songs drug out too long. I'm all for a good jam but repetitive loops seemed out of place, would've been just as happy with 2.5 hours. Extremely impressive band to keep the energy going for that long.

Very talented band. He/they sounded great despite the fact that the venue isn't great acoustically speaking. Much heavier show than expected. Didn't play a lot of his earlier songs I wanted to hear. Did at least 7 covers, which seems excessive. Barely said 3 words the whole show and seemed very disconnected from his audience.

The music was great. Simpson is amazing to see live. The venue however (MGM) is awful. Terrible bathroom set up, people mopping the floor all through the concert disrupting your space, overzealous security guards. Way overpriced beverages. Although the water was free, which was nice.. I’ll never go back Unless Led Zeppelin playing

I had a really great time. This is the 2nd time in less then a year seeing Sturgill. He's always great, but this venue makes it better. The sound quality was on point, the crowd was great to be around. I'll go see him again in a heart beat.

An extraordinary live act and a three-hour set without breaks. Great performance even if I like more compact and shorter. I think that two hours would have been enough and I would have liked a dramaturgically clear structure in the setlist. I’m glad I was there.

The Armory is huge and amazing! Acoustics are great considering how big the venue is. No lines for drinks or bathroom. Sturgill puts on a hell of a jam session! 3 hours straight or great American music. Fantastic show!! Would do it all again.
